Capra

A Romanian folk dance to be met with all over the country in
various variants bearing the name of "capra" (Moldavia), "brezaie" (Wallachia), "turca"(Transylvania), "boul" (Moldavia), "bonta" or"bourita" (Southern Transylvania), "deer" (Hunedoara). It is one of the winter customs, observed at the New Year. A man wearing the head of a goat, an ox or a deer made of wood, and his body covered by a sheepskin
coat turned inside out, or a flowery carpet or a piece of cloth adorned with strips of many- coloured paper- dances and executes comics figures, accompanied by the "strigaturi" of the band of young men who are with him. The dance is often accompanied by music played on the violin, on the pipe
etc.

BV; Winter traditions

Caluti

Dance with maska in Northen Moldavia, danced by groups of lads at the New Year. The costumes are made so as to suggest men horseback.

Plugusorul

Ancient New Year custom, observed especialy in Moldavia and Wallachia; boys, even lods decorate a plough with strips of coloured paper, with it from house to house reciting, singing carols, sounding bells and cracking whips. Sometimes the "plugusorul" is accompaniad by the
"buhai". ("plugusorul"=little plough)
