What is the Spring Day in Europe?
12/11/02

An important debate about the future of Europe is going on right now. Some members of the European Convention - Olivier Duhamel, and Ana Palacio, joined by Michel Barnier, Henning Christophersen and Georgios Katiforis - believe that young people should understand what the Convention is doing, and have their say in the discussions about the future of Europe. They have come up with a way to achieve this through the organisation of a day of debate for schools and pupils - Spring Day in Europe!

Spring Day in Europe aims to get schools to organise an event on 21 March 2003 - their own Spring Day in Europe. The event should increase pupils' and teachers' involvement in helping to define a new Europe through the European Convention.

The Spring Day in Europe was developed with the EU Ministries of Education and is supported by the European Commission's Secretariat General: Public debate on the future of Europe Unit, Task Force on the Future of the Union. European Schoolnet (EUN) is supporting schools in their endeavors by providing the Spring Day web site with ideas, tools and activities for teachers and by building European Spring Day schools networks.

How to participate

Each school in the EU member states or associated countries is invited to take part in Spring Day in Europe. Participation can be in any form: a discussion, a meeting with celebrities and experts involved in European matters, a debate between pupils within the school or between pupils from schools in different countries, either directly or via the Internet - the options are endless! Elected representatives or other European decision-makers should be invited to participate. It is also a good idea to involve schools in the candidate countries. The project is based on voluntary participation at local level. There are no cumbersome procedures or financial requirements. Regions or countries wishing to develop projects at their level are welcome to do so.

Schools planning to organise a Spring Day in Europe event should register at the Spring Day web site. All registered schools that send a summary of their event or make a substantial contribution to Spring Day in Europe receive a certificate for their participation.
