who had nothing in common with art as it is. This practice
gave life to substitution of really creative people by those who may
be called functionaries in art. Once Ernst Neizvestnyii said: “
History knew an artist-madman,
an artist-tyrant, but socialist realism gave life to mutant: an artist-functionary,
which is naturally-contradictory as a doctor-killer or a terrorist-rescuer.
Having created functionaries in art communist
leaders killed the very essence of creation. Everybody, namely actors,
writers,
artists - should have lived in the frames of “rules”,
only few of them dared not to obey. They managed preserve their dignity,
could move forward, develop their skills, reflecting their thoughts,
views, attitude to life processes and historical events according to
personal sensations. Nobody but them
paneled real Freedom. Freedom - is a very complicated
notion. And it has almost lost its
birch sense during the years of our communist past. We lived in society
where people thought in one way, but spoke and acted in the other way.
“Doublethinking” - that was
personality of our life. It couldn’t but touched to notion
“Freedom”. There is one more
feature of communism, which is worth mentioning. It locked flexibility.
It night to some extent be compared with chess field, where only two
colors existed – black & white. The political system our
country lived in
derided all people in two groups: black & white, in other words
– reliable & unreliable, friends & enemies. Everything,
which was created by those, who were considered to be
unreliable, was called wrong & was forbidden. On the other hand,
communist system strictly deviated our society into those, who created
smith by means their hands & intellect and those, who never created
but only distributed. The vast majority of the population belonged to
the second group had the right to distribute. To define human values,
to show the way Dictatorship Holrished. The life
and destiny of creative person totally depended upon the
point of view of some functionary

. It was unbearable. Such people as EN chose their one
way. They left their native country and went abroad in order not to bury
their talent and not to feel oneself a white crown Surely, “to
live” didn’t mean to retreat, on the
contrary, “to leave” meant to fight against totalitarism,
to rote for democracy. Only brave people could afford it, because it was
dangerous. Meditating about communist system, the
slogan of which was “ Equality” I come to conclusion
that the system couldn’t but buried creative essence of people.
In the world of “Doublethinking”, ldquo; Equality’
ment” “ Nivelizing’ ment” I’d
like to finish with E.Neizvestnyii’s words: “ They
didn’t like me, -- he said, -- because I was not a member of
the community, because I dared to live my own life”.
This is the poem:
Kogda narod-pervoistochnik
menyaet istinu i veru,
pechalen rzrebii odinochek,
kto veren sobstvennomu vektoru.
Sredi vilyayushih ulybochek
i mod, chto vse perelopatili,
moi put' pryamoi i bezoshybochnyi,
kak pishevod shpagoglotatelya.
