Yes. We still live in communism because old methods in political life, planned economy and very strong government still exist.

No, we don’t live in a communistic country, because the order that existed in the USSR was not communism.

We live not in a communistic state, because communism is the result of the first phase (socialism) but in our state the first phase wasn’t finished and took an indefinite shape. Now we live in a state where socialistic and capitalistic signs mixed (but socialistic
signs are much stronger (planned economy, concentration of power etc.).

By the way speaking about “great principles” what is the difference between socialism with the formula “from everyone according to his abilities, to everyone according to his work” and capitalism? Who can answer? Anycase the more I think about it the more I agree with M.Bulgakov that the revolution 1917 and the soviet order were just a global experiment, which is too long in Belarus.

If you are interested in this problem I’m waiting for your letters.

Communist Belarus: Yesterday. Today. Tomorrow?

At the beginning of 90-s the world has changed considerably. Selectionof a new course in the development of the state is a rather difficult process. Is democracy good enough? May be, it’s better to come back to what is called “the communist past”? These questions are still dividing the society. Nowadays the reminiscences of “the communist past” are
still troubling people’s minds. The points of view declared are as different as people who declare them. What is the reason for having so different views? Probably they are rooted in the various meanings of the same idea of communism? For a lot of people communist is associated with a complete, practically total control over the society by the state. The state power takes under control not only the economy, culture, press but the private life of each person without leaving him any freedom of action and thought. Violence was an integral characteristic of the communist system (at least the system which was built in the countries of the socialist league of states). The most typical was the USSR. The country lived as “a military camp” where “enemies” were searched and punished roughness. The social life was built on the principle “not allowed anything except what is ordered”. To put this principle into practice the communist regime created an oppressive system which couldn’t be cooperated without fear. People were afraid of making protest or been appalled. Those who extermination. Repressions of the 30-s are remembered forgotten till nowadays. Anyway in the modern Belarusian society there is another conception also: communism was based not only on terror and oppression. Lots of people considered it “their own” power. The reason of that is quite simple. The adapts of the system (of it’s education and traditions) they took it for granted that the communist power understand people needs and interests and expresses them better than they do it themselves. That’s why they trusted it to govern their lives and destinies. They were given back a feeling of been defended, a feeling of been provided all they need in their life by the government if they behave dquo;right” according to the principles of communist morality. Frequently you can hear one more point of view. It is considered that communism didn’t exist express this idea are right: pure communism hasn’t been built. And there is a question: Is it possible to built a pure communist society?
